Dairbhre is a lyric poetry project about attempting to know a desired place by walking the roads of that place in that place, in memory, and most accessibly/obsessively, in Google Street View. There are many walks. “One Walk,” a poem in 7 sections, goes from Knightstown to a specific house in Upper Tinnies on Valentia Island. Although the project is intended to be about place and displacement, it manifests currently as being about metaphor, a form of transport I find particularly challenging. And they’re all challenging. The poem is composed primarily in Google Street View, but also on the actual road, and allowing memory. Its intended form is audio-visual recording but at the ELO, I will simply read several sections, without the video

SimpleTEXT is a collaborative audio/visual public performance that relies on audience participation through input from mobile devices such as phones, PDAs or laptops. SimpleTEXT focuses on dynamic input from participants as essential to the overall output. The performance creates a dialogue between participants who submit messages which control the audiovisual output of the installation. These messages are first parsed according to a code that dictates how the music is created, and then rhythmically drive a speech synthesizer and a picture synthesizer in order to create a compelling, collaborative audiovisual performance. SimpleTEXT was originally funded by a commission from Low-Fi, a new media arts organization based in the UK.

Abstract (in English)

Pedro Barbosa recalls in this interview his memories of the first studies and works of electronic literature back in the 1970s when he was a student at the University of Porto. Starting from considerations about his collaborative works he makes a comparison between printed literature tradition and the age of new media focusing on the paradigmatic change of this very transitional period with live in and the differences of the creative work. Furthermore he makes an interesting statement on regard of the aesthetics of new media by comparing works of electronic literature with the oral tradition. In the end he mentions some of the milestones of electronic literature that he considers important.

In this interview Domenico Chiappe describes his works of both electronic literature and print literature published between the years 2000-2012. He gives insight into the interesting collaborative work for the work of electronic literature and ponders about the difference of the two forms of expressions: the printed book and new media. His then articulates discourse about the language of new media taking in account the SMS Literature and his concept of hiperphonia. On regard of the new possibilities provided by new media technology, he maintains that there should be a certain balance and harmony of the audio-visual effects and the written texts.

har efterhånden produceret over 40 flashtekster udformet i samme jazzede minimalistiske stil der ligner ældre kunstformer som konkret poesi og eksperimenterende film. Værkerne leger med den animerede tekst narrative muligheder og animationens slægtsskab med musikken, men er samtidig set fra new media art-vinklen primitivt enkle og gammeldags. Ingen klikken, ingen læservalg, ingen faren vild i det ergodiske trafikkaos. Man læner sig dovent tilbage og lade sig udstoppe som en foisgrasgås med ord og atter ord, akkompagneret af sort jazz og ofte af Victorias kælne computerstemme.

Seven accomplices with different backgrounds, from academical to performative to critical, is granted the opportunity to go amok in Goetrians poetry collection Risperdalsonetterne (The Risperdal Sonnets). Their starting points are different: be associative, go philosophical, give into, trying to interpret. Video, print, quotations and pictures supplements each other in a mosaic where the seven voices comment upon the poems and direct them in connection to other interpretations and collections.

Syv deltagere med vidt forskellig faglig baggrund har fået chancen for at gå amok i Simon Grotrians seneste digtsamling, Risperdalsonetterne. De har hver især valgt en sonet at tage udgangspunkt i: undre sig over, give sig hen til, fare vild i, associere ud fra, fortolke, aktualisere, irriteres eller begejstres over. Videoer, udskrifter, citater, billeder og stills supplerer hinanden i en mosaik, hvor de syv stemmer kommenterer digtene og rækker ud efter andre værker og fortolkninger. Den grafiske præsentation bringer de enkelte stemmer i dialog. Sitets læser kan vælge sin egen rute gennem vildnisset: der er mulighed for at bevæge sig gennem hver enkelt læsning i den rækkefølge, den er blevet til i, eller man kan forfølge temaer og associationer og springe på kryds og tværs i tekstdiagrammet.

“The Office Diva” is an audio-visual installation; a large scale projection of a computer-controlled character living in a claustrophobic virtual space and compulsively talking. Conceptually, the project is a reproduction and examination of a consciousness ruled by manic-depression. But she is also a machine, and the work plays with the ways in which mad and machinic behavior can manifest in similar ways. Phoebe Sengers argues that the modular design of some intelligent agents makes them hard to understand, they appear to be a schizoid assemblage of random, unmotivated behaviors. Contariwise the computational limitations of other agents have been masked by their insane personalities. Repetitions, lack of affect, inappropriate responses, and non-sequiturs are signs of disturbed people as well as machines. In this project, we deliberately chose a bland machine voice, that speaks the stream-of-consciousness text which is generated, re-ordered and reassembled by a machinic algorithm. But, just as deliberately, we massage the relationship between text and code so that our ”mad” consciousness is not so badly fragmented and fractured as to be indecipherable to a human audience. Over time the bland voice reveals a mad, sad story: a pedestrian story of a receptionist; a perfectionist who works too hard in her small therapy center; a critical observer who sees too much going wrong and strives to fix it; an office Don Quixote tilting at the windmalls of petty inefficiency and corruption; a woman slowing exploding. The voice comes from the psychic emanation of the Office Diva: a larger than life projection of her ego. The graphics represent another synthesis between machine and human; procedural animation creates the flaming or dripping archetype that forms into a dimly human form, that is then reanimated with motion capture. The Diva’s anima swirls chaotically in response to the internal narratives she retells so intently. She drifts in the dimly seen and utterly mundane office environment that has taken on so much overdetermined significance.
