Abstract (in English)

Since the emergence of photography in the 19th-century, ‘technical images’—which media philosopher Vilém Flusser defines as images constructed through the use of an ‘apparatus’— have replaced traditional images (sketching, drawing, painting, etc…) as the principal mode of objective documentation for mapping and representing reality. In fact it is this perceived objective character of the medium that has historically problematised its classification as an accepted artform. As a reaction, artists have long explored methods for circumventing the overriding social status of photography, by developing practices that operate to undermine its primary existence as strict documentation. Historical examples of this include, the photomontage of the early 20th-century by Dada artists (eg. Kurt Schwitters, John Heartfield), who spliced together images from mass media in order to construct new aesthetic scenes, and The Pictures Generation of the 1970s and 80s (eg. Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince), who utilised methods such as staged and found photography in order to question the long embedded interpretation of the medium as that which is simply a transparent window overlaying the world. In more recent years we have seen the appearance of many artists deploying glitch techniques as a means of probing the limits of digital objectivity in contemporary image culture. Technically referring to an unexpected error that occurs within a machinic system, encounters with glitches have become much more prominent due to the increasing prevalence of computerized technologies. Caleb Kelly has argued that artistic practices that explicitly attempt to exploit and utilize glitches for aesthetic purposes, ‘became popular in the late twentieth century’ and are ‘a key marker in the development of digital arts practices.’ This turn towards harnessing the artistic potentiality of the glitch has been described by Kim Cascone as part of the ‘postdigital aesthetic,’ which developed from immersion within ‘environments suffused with digital technology’. Constant envelopment within these spaces has made us more attuned to the ‘“failure” of digital technology’, resulting in a growing awareness of the presence of errors that exist within all computational systems. This paper will explore what happens when technologies of representation break down, through an analysis of the concept of the glitch as utilised within photographic artworks. The central aim is to highlight how the dominant social construction of the technical image—and its historically indelible relationship to the real—is undermined by instances of glitch art, by problematising its claim as objective document of reality, and via an extension of the aesthetic possibilities of machinic agency through its foregrounding of (non-human) noise and error. Through an articulation of the inherent presence of randomness and non-objectivity in the technical image, the indeterminate and speculative dimension of the medium will be discussed as that which is not simply a trait that should be ignored, but instead one which forms a necessary condition of its perceptual existence.

Abstract (in English)

This paper explores the concept of narrativity throughout space by analyzing the distributed novel Implementation (Rettberg and Montfort 2012). Distributed narratives are literary texts that are distributed across different spaces and times to create divergence rather than unity (Walker 1). Implementation consists of 240 stickers with text fragments and people are invited to put up stickers in a place of their choice on public surfaces. The stickers could then be photographed and added to the project website.The practice of putting up the stickers highly influences the way in which the actor views the space, connecting elements in the text fragment to elements in their surroundings. The actor who places the sticker might not have noticed certain elements if it hadn't been for the text on the sticker. Once the sticker is placed in its context, the opposite occurs: the surroundings influences the reading of the narrative.This diffraction between narrative and space is highlighted by the act of photography and online collection, as the digital interface shows the immediate context of the sticker but makes the city as a whole invisible. For the 'analog' reader, however, the context of the whole city is highly visible as the sticker has to be found inside the city.  The combination of analog and digital practices of Implementation thus highlights the representation of the city as a visual practice. In this way, the city becomes part of the work and vice versa in both physical and digital settings.

This paper analyses the work by means of a new materialist "diffractive reading" (Barad and Haraway) between the narrative and its urban context. I propose to regard the urban space as a ‘text’ and read how this (con)text interacts with the narrative stickers. My paper will also outline future plans for empirical experiments Implementation.

College of Fine Arts (COFA), University of New South Wales is organising its latest graduation exhibition at Sydney.

The COFA Annual 2010 features a stunning array of animation, ceramics, drawing, digital imaging, environments, graphics, installation, interactive media, jewellery, motion graphics, objects, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, sound, textiles and video works by COFA's more than 350 graduating students.

An exhibition exploring the details (and tangential experiments) hidden in elemental residues, using water and flow as a principal starting position to connect the audience to both the work and to the outside port lands.

Three artists, Fleeta Chew Siegel, Maria Mencia & Fiona Curran will touch on/swim in/float by /on ideas informed by (and in response to) elemental substances and forms, using e-poetry, data visualization, film, sonics, calligrams, and photography to showcase a complex series of composite art works.

The Reverberatory Narrative: Toward Story as a Multisensory Network is an evolving, transmedia series that employs print, film, installation and digital practices in the assembling and disassembling of lyric essays, poetry, graphic design, photography and physical artifacts in an experimental documentary of memory, time and story. The initial form of this documentary work was an installation at the photography gallery Agnes in Birmingham, Alabama in 1993, titled "Undressing Audrey," in which the viewer physically "undressed" the book, slipping text from a woman's garments, one button and layer at a time. Through subsequent, increasingly digital interpretations, Pretty relied on a layered structure that attempted to approximate the original installation experience through a series of overlapping narrative threads that could be sorted and resorted by different contexts and media types, such as time, place, character, artifact, image, audio, and video, among others. Its current experiment extends the work to augmented reality in an effort to return Pretty to its origin as installation — as a multi-sensory experiment in physical space with a digital layer — the final leg of a journey began in 1989.

Abstract (in English)

In this interview Domenico Chiappe describes his works of both electronic literature and print literature published between the years 2000-2012. He gives insight into the interesting collaborative work for the work of electronic literature and ponders about the difference of the two forms of expressions: the printed book and new media. His then articulates discourse about the language of new media taking in account the SMS Literature and his concept of hiperphonia. On regard of the new possibilities provided by new media technology, he maintains that there should be a certain balance and harmony of the audio-visual effects and the written texts.

Failure, A Writer’s Life is a catalogue of literary monstrosities. Its loosely organized vignettes and convolutes provide the intrepid reader with a philosophy for the unreadable, a consolation for the ignored, and a map for new literary worlds. "The unfinished, unreadable, unpublishable — the scribbled and illegible, the too slowly published, the countless unpublished, all that does not seem to count at all. . . . here lie all manner of ruins. From Marguerite Duras to Google Maps, Henri Bergson to H.P. Lovecraft, Orson Welles to Walter Benjamin to a host of literary ambulance drivers (not to mention the FBI, UFOs, and UbuWeb), _Failure, A Writer's Life_ charts empty spaces and occupied libraries, searches databases bereft of filters, files spam and porn and weather reports into their respective _konvoluts_, and realizes the full potential of cultural inscription. In a series of snapshots concatenated in the best surrealist mode, Milutis has curated a catalogue of curiosities as essential to understanding our current cultural condition as they are eccentric. With Nietzschean _witz_ and self-reflexive bravura, he teases out the occult links between heterogeneities in the tradition of Allen S. Weiss and Greil Marcus. In the process, Milutis redefines the 'virtual' as something much broader and more interesting than digital simulacra: as the unmanageable storehouse of memory and the inevitable expanse of forgetfulness. Le poème au coeur de SeeVeniceAndDie a été écrit en 2005 pour "L'isola dei Poeti" - événement initié à l'occasion de la 51ème biennale de Venise - par Marco Nereo Rotelli sous le commissariat d'exposition d'Achille Bonito Oliva et Caterina Davinio pour Virtual Island. Ce poème est un genre de sabir ou autrement dit, un pérégrinisme. Mélange de plusieurs langues dans le même discours, SeeVeniceandDie met en scène, en médias, en programmes, ces actes de langages, à travers un automate de synthèse vocale qui lit dans sa langue naturelle, l'anglais et se risque aussi en français et en italien, deux langues qui me sont devenues - à moi - culturellement naturelles. Il a fallu "plier" quelque peu l'orthographe des mots pour faciliter l'interprétation de Vicky, voix synthétique féminine du système OSX, afin de parfaire sa prononciation. S'il a ici [ pour Internet ] la forme d'une vidéo de 8 minutes et 30 secondes, il est en fait un poème variable composé d'un prologue et trois actes, se joue au clavier et souris et répond aux sollicitations des lettres formant le mot "Venise" dans ses trois langues. Sa forme et sa taille le destinent plus à une édition DVD-Rom qu'à l'Internet. Le dispositif affiche le texte du poème dans ses langues naturelles (EN/FR/IT), en code binaire pour les experts, en code hexadécimal pour les hybrides et en code barre pour les consuméristes. Abstract (in English)

The coordinates are deceptive! Doesn’t matter the position of the point, but the force that it produces, the space that it opens in the landscape of the real. This issue zero aims to contribute to a non-cartesian idea of point. Thinking its meaning from four anti-geometrical hypotheses. The point as a beginning (a space opening); the point as force and disturb (maybe creative); the point as network (points that aggregate other points), but most of all, the point as something that takes place, that supervenes in the unquiet landscape of the real, a singularity.
