Abstract (in English)

Private Screening is a live performance which considers questions of presence, access, and vulnerability in light of a cultural rush into interfaces of abstraction.

Locked in feedback loops that route through the computational cloud, the mind's means of provisionally defining itself — language — becomes data to be collected, systematized, synthesized, monetized, and maximized for impact. In these conditions, what does it mean to speak and to listen intimately? When the mind is persistently joined with networks, what does it mean to be self-consciously present?

Private Screening is a commissioned work responding to Goat Island's 2007 performance The Lastmaker. It premiered as part of the Goat Island Archive, a retrospective exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center in June 2019.

The transformation of physical phenomena into data —the pass from analog to digital— has played an important role in expanding our understandings of what is art and what it means to be an artist. This transformation has also changed the way we understand and perform with media and has opened innumerable avenues for experimentation within and across different forms of representation. The outcomes of this experimentation could illuminate our knowledge of creative processes. As part of our research on glitch pedagogy and transmediation over the last two years (Peña, James & DLC, 2016), we have experimented with the functionalities of raw data by comparing patterns of mis/representation between textual, aural and visual data. Our inquiries have allowed us to engage in the intervention and purposeful disruption of these patterns while shedding light on the underlying processes behind these disruptive practices. Delivered as a performance, this paper will demonstrate a few such practices. In our role as noise-musicians, we will improvisualize a transmediatic piece while describing the process behind it. This performance/presentation will start with the production of a natively visual digital artifact (i.e., a digital photograph). This artifact, produced during the session involving attendees, will be then translated into while modifying the sound with analog synthesizers. Simultaneously poetry will be performed, recorded and interpolated with the raw data of the pictures' sound file. This step will effectively involve passing digital data through an analog channel before its re-digitization in real-time. Finally, the intervened artifact will then be re-presented in its visual form. Our presentation will not only contrast between performance as a process and performance as a product, it will allow participants to compare the aesthetic properties of an artifact when presented both in a native and in a non-native format, and will reveal the patterns-in-common between these different media by merit of disrupting them.

Electronic literature is a term that encompasses creative texts produced for printed media which are consumed in electronic format, as well as text produced for electronic media that could not be printed without losing essential qualities. In this paper we propose that works of electronic literature, understood as text (with possible inclusion of multimedia elements) designed to be consumed in bi or multi-directional electronic media, are evolving to become n-tier information systems. By "n-tier information system" we understand a configuration of components clearly separated in at least three independent layers: data (the textual content), process (computational interactions) and presentation (on-screen rendering of the narrative). In this paper, we build two basic arguments. On the one hand, we propose that the conception of electronic literature as an information system exploits the essence of electronic media, and we predict that this paradigm will become dominant in this field within the next few years. On the other hand, we propose that building information systems may also lead in a shift of emphasis from one-time artistic novelties to reusable systems. Finally, we show that this type of systems is impossible to archive with current approaches in the field, and offer a solution for the preservation of this type of works.

Over the past decade, expanding access to Big Data has produced a number of innovations in electronic literature and digital culture more broadly, ranging from Twitter bots, media art and generative poetry utilizing social data to vernacular creative writing, journalism and fictocriticism on platforms such as Tumblr and BuzzFeed. These divergent modes of expression all rely on the ability to find and sort high-volume, real-time, multimodal digital data – for example tweets, Instagram photos, animated GIFs, YouTube videos, SoundCloud audio tracks and more – and recombine them in novel works of bricolage. Yet despite the increasing prominence of these writing practices, they have received scant scholarly attention.

In this paper, I propose that we consider these works as a discrete class that employ a novel and distinctive orientation to literary craft: namely, the central writerly act inheres not in the crafting of sentences but in interfacing with data structures via search string manipulation. This process typically has three steps: first, a search string is constructed with primarily Boolean operators; next, the results are sorted via manual browsing or algorithmic filtering; finally, the disparate content is assembled together with traditionally crafted text or paratext into a coherent whole. I demonstrate the technique with two examples: the data-driven e-lit installation “Death of an Alchemist” by myself and Dr Andrew Burrell, appearing at ISEA2015, and the “Buzzademia” digital humanities initiative led by Mark Marino, which I have been closely involved in as a writer for BuzzFeed.

With its emphasis on repurposing online content, this emergent digital writing technique clearly must be understood as belonging to the broader ecosystem of remix culture; it also has obvious links to the conceptual poetry movement. However, the emphasis on optimizing data search sets these works apart from those related tendencies. Invoking Sigmund Freud’s analogy of the “mystic writing pad”, which has previously been compared with hypertext, I suggest that we understand this new poetics through a related metaphor: scratch art paper, a children’s toy that allows the user to trace an original figure that is wholly constituted by another, previously created drawing. Literary originality is, increasingly, expressed through the deployment of virtuosic search terms aimed at finding the creative work of others.

This nascent form of poetics is, I argue, a defining literary technique of the age of Big Data. Indeed, for several reasons, we may consider such writing as being not literary but post-literary. It often resists categorization under the rubric of “literature”, proudly associating with lowbrow and vernacular forms of communication. Such writing also eschews traditional models of literary authorship in favour of a liminal form of human-machinic agency. Finally, it is often pervasively multimodal, de-emphasizing the written word in favor of image, video and other non-verbal data.

The post-literary turn, if we accept that is what these forms of writing represent, offers some exciting new modes of creative expression. On the other hand, it may also be considered symptomatic of what Peter Sloterdijk has called the waning power of language – and the growing tyranny of images and data – under late capitalism. Reconceiving search strings as literature thus presents a tangled knot of opportunities and problems.

Death Of An Alchemist is a multimedia novel written by Big Data—a detective story generated in real-time from live online content. The installation consists of an 8m wall displaying 128 pages of projected text, symbols and charts. This content is generated by scraping Twitter, Google and social platforms for today’s headlines, social media conversations, memes and more. The text flickers and updates as new data is received, yet still creates a coherent narrative that can be read from beginning to end. This is thanks to a bespoke technique we have termed the “poetics of search”: using a combination of search operators and algorithms to mine data, then string manipulation to fit it cohesively into a new plot. In the story, readers investigate the death of 16th century alchemist Trithemius. He has left behind a supposedly magical book, Steganographia, said to reveal the “clavis magna”: the idea from which all knowledge flows. Readers must decode the book to find the clues to Trithemius’ murder. But this is no ordinary leather-bound volume… The work is an extended allegory for coercive uses of Big Data by technology companies such as Google and Facebook, which aim to create their own “clavis magna”. Death of an Alchemist is an official selection of the 2015 International Symposium on Electronic Art, to be held in Vancouver, Canada. In Always Already New, Lisa Gitelman explores the newness of new media while she asks what it means to do media history. Using the examples of early recorded sound and digital networks, Gitelman challenges readers to think about the ways that media work as the simultaneous subjects and instruments of historical inquiry. Presenting original case studies of Edison's first phonographs and the Pentagon's first distributed digital network, the ARPANET, Gitelman points suggestively toward similarities that underlie the cultural definition of records (phonographic and not) at the end of the nineteenth century and the definition of documents (digital and not) at the end of the twentieth. As a result, Always Already New speaks to present concerns about the humanities as much as to the emergent field of new media studies. Records and documents are kernels of humanistic thought, after all―part of and party to the cultural impulse to preserve and interpret. Gitelman's argument suggests inventive contexts for "humanities computing" while also offering a new perspective on such traditional humanities disciplines as literary history. Making extensive use of archival sources, Gitelman describes the ways in which recorded sound and digitally networked text each emerged as local anomalies that were yet deeply embedded within the reigning logic of public life and public memory. In the end Gitelman turns to the World Wide Web and asks how the history of the Web is already being told, how the Web might also resist history, and how using the Web might be producing the conditions of its own historicity.

"My Life in Three Parts" addresses the question of how personal identity is influenced by the language of the web. Our online interactions are often circumscribed by tracking software and various social networks. As a result, our identities--how we view ourselves and how others view us--are shaped and expressed, in part, by personal browsing practices and the vocabulary associated with those practices. So what do our autobiographies look like in this new world? To answer this question, "My Life in Three Parts" ignores the conventions of traditional autobiography in favor of oblique readings of iconic visual symbols, terminology, and concepts found online within the private and social web-spaces of shopping, art, and mathematics. This work uses text, images, audio, and videos to create a synthesized narrative of the self. Nothing about personal identity is clear in this work: the life behind the story is only implied.

Electronic Literature and Digital Art share many processes, themes, creative and theoretical guidelines. In this sense, I developed a critical framework that could resist to a hyperdisciplinary analysis and include one of the characteristics of this sharing pattern: the transfer and transformation processes. In order to recognize these processes I have done an approach of the transduction concept that could perform a theoretical migration on these aspects: the transducer function. Thus, the transducer function appears in the critical analysis of the works by Mark Z. Danielewski, Stuart Moulthrop, R. Luke DuBois and André Sier. The selected works are representative of the following genres: novel, hyperfiction, net.art and digital installation, drawing on phenomena and concerns resulting from the creative production within the digital culture. A literatura electrónica e a arte digital partilham vários processos, temas, linhas criativas e referentes teóricos. Neste sentido, chegou-se a um enquadramento teórico que pudesse resistir a uma análise hiperdisciplinar e englobar uma das características desta partilha: os processos de transferência e transformação. Para reconhecer estes processos recorreu-se ao conceito de transdução para efectuar uma migração teórica capaz de suportar essas valências: a função transdutora. Deste modo, a função transdutora surge na crítica das obras de Mark Z. Danielewski, Stuart Moulthrop, R. Luke DuBois e André Sier. As obras seleccionadas são representativas dos seguintes géneros: romance, hiperficção, net.art e instalação digital, extraindo fenómenos e preocupações resultantes da produção criativa no âmbito da cultura digital. Nesta investigação foram realçados mecanismos, padrões, linguagens e motivos comuns: autoria, utilizador, cibertexto, superfície, hipertexto, infoduto, interactividade, pixel, algoritmo, código, programação, rede, software e dados.

"Datamatics is an art project that explores the potential to perceive the invisible multi-substance of data that permeates our world. It is a series of experiments in various forms - audiovisual concerts, installations, publications and CD releases - that seek to materialise pure data." As part of several datamatics exhibition and audiovisual performances, is the "test pattern" system. "test pattern is a system that converts any type of data (text, sounds, photos and movies) into barcode patterns and binary patterns of 0s and 1s. Through its application, the project aims to examine the relationship between critical points of device performance and the threshold of human perception." One exhibition setup of datamatics is data.tron. "data.tron [8K enhanced version]" is part of the datamatics project. The new work is an enhanced version of the audiovisual installation data.tron, where each single pixel of visual image is strictly calculated by mathematical principle, composed from a combination of pure mathematics and the vast sea of data present in the world. In this latest version visitors are literally immersed in the work, as data is seamlessly projected onto the gallery wall and floor from eight sources."
