Abstract (in English)

The market, the academia, parents and even pediatricians have witnessed the growing avalanche of digital products aimed at appeasing adults’ anxieties regarding the education of future generations, of children who have already fallen prey to the fascination of the screens. Among this offer overdose, it is difficult to elucidate which products are actually fulfilling their promises and which are dull, ineffective or even aggravating the evils they are supposedly counteracting. This presentation will address some of the concerns regarding the future of reading education by focusing on the study of two bilingual works: an enriched digitized edition of an old children story and a piece of interactive fiction. Each textual modality requires different strategies to produce engaging forms of interactivity, though in both cases the pedagogical intention is the same: to promote the pleasure of reading. In the first case, we have chosen to refresh “Una ciudad de libros” (“A City of Books”), a forgotten text from the Spanish Silver Age Period published in 1923 inside the collection Plaga de dragones. This period, famous for the effervescence of its cultural life, saw the emergence of Saturnino Calleja Publishing House, or as it has been described today, the Zara of Books. Creating an enriched digital version of this text has allowed us to make relevant discoveries about this collection from a philological perspective. At the same time, we hope to have provided teachers, parents and children alike with an attractive new edition of the work which can help children today enjoy the same stories that their grandparents read nearly a hundred years ago, using digital edition to bridge a cultural as well as temporal gap between children from different times and places. (“Una ciudad de libros”/ “A City of Books” from the collection Calleja Interactivo/Interactive Calleja (prototype version)) The other selected work is an original piece of interactive fiction written by the Marino family entitled “El Cambiazo”/ “Switcheroo” from the collection of stories Mrs. Wobbles & the Tangerine House. This work, which progressively places young readers in front of nontrivial and difficult moral choices, allows us to study reader’s interaction from new angles given the potentialities of its infrastructure, the Undum platform, a free and open-source, JavaScript-based interactive storytelling platform developed by Ian Millington. Last year in Porto, the panel dedicated to children e-lit debated over the different types of interactivity found in e-lit works, establishing a gradation with respect to their ability to increase the reader’s appreciation and understanding of the story. This paper attempts to further this discussion by presenting some reading experiences carried out at several schools in Madrid and LA of these two types of interactive stories for children from 9 to 11 years old. These experiences will be used to test the design of the experiment, which could be hopefully carried out more extensively after opening it to criticism and discussion at the ELO venue.

Wandering Meimei / Meimei Liu Lang Ji is a bilingual interactive fiction app designed for mobile interfaces for the Chinese market. This story is an intertext to the traditional Chinese comic strip, Sanmao Liu Lang Ji (Wandering Sanmao), a homeless boy. Meimei, meaning little sister, is an allegorical character and contemporary representation of the largest migrant population the world has ever seen: the migrant female factory worker. Through the app, you can make contact with the character Meimei who works in a smartphone factory in the Pearl River Delta city Guangzhou. Meimei's only technology and access point to the outside world is through her own phone. The social media hub and interface enable you to enter and become a part of Meimei's story.

The Tunnel People project is a work originally created for the exhibition "Metropolis", which was developed in two platforms. On the one hand the hypertext is a story of multiple paths presenting the fiction of mysterious inhabitants living in the underground. On the other hand there were a series of performances played by three actors, two men and one woman inside of trains traveling from North to South in Brussels subway. The actions and dialogues written by Dora García and performed by the actors try to awaken on the user the need to decide if the situation created by the performances can be accepted as real or if he/she has been trapped in a representation which aim is unknown. The questions that this project wants to suggest are: What is the limit of the accepted behaviourby the audience? How a strange situation can be felt as familiar? When does a conversation becomes absurd? Is it true that thruth is under the earth?

El proyecto The Tunnel People es un trabajo originalmente creado para la exposición "Metro>Polis", que se desarrolló en dos plataformas. Por un lado un hipertexto que es un relato de múltiples recorridos que presenta la ficción de los misteriosos habitantes del subsuelo. Por otro una serie de performances realizadas por tres actores, dos hombres y una mujer, dentro de uno de los trenes que realizan el recorrido Norte-Sur del metro de Bruselas. Las acciones y diálogos, elaborados por Dora García y representados por los actores, pretenden despertar en el usuario la necesidad de decidir si la situación creada por las performances puede ser aceptada como real o si ha sido atrapado en una representación cuya finalidad desconoce. Las preguntas que este trabajo quiere proponer son tales como: ¿Cuál es el límite de la conducta aceptable como normal en público? ¿Cómo puede una situación extraña sentirse como familiar? ¿Cuándo exactamente una conversación empieza a perderse en el absurdo? ¿Es cierto que la verdad está bajo tierra?

Bilingual CD-Rom (French/ English) for Macintosh and Windows by Karen O'Rourke Paris Network assembles photographs, sound samples, animations and texts to form a composite, layered image of the city, where the traces of places are confronted with the memories of people who have known them. It opens with a view of a map. As you move closer, you begin to lose your bearings. In each zone, you explore the city differently. Four entrances, four ways of looking, four structural devices. You will always have, even as you move around, a fragmentary view, evoking a vast, more complete "hors-champ", which always seems out of reach. You enter as if you were breaking in. Each of the four parts has its own system of navigation. 1. Six Itineraries. 2. Jogging in the Roquette Square. 3. A Voyage Around my Courtyard. 4. Erasing a Billboard. In one, the focus is more on visual perception, in another, you are asked to imagine people and things you don't see, the third allows you to explore and the fourth to tinker with the images on the screen. A fifth zone, accessible from within the others, is both navigational tool and urban perspective.

Il s’ouvre sur un plan de la ville. A mesure que l’on s’approche, l’image se pixellise, le sujet se dissout. Dans chacune des quatre zones, on parcourt les lieux différemment. Quatre regards, quatre temps, quatre dispositifs structurels. On aura toujours, même lorsque l’on se déplace, une vue fragmentaire, évoquant un hors champ plus vaste, plus complet, toujours hors de portée. On entre comme par effraction. Online work first published in 2008. Main theme: nature. As the work is loading, a quote appears: "It's not safe out here. It's wondrous." The fog shifts to reveal a lone tree, a flock of birds scatter. A deep drone is sounding. When attempting to click on the birds different texts are activated. When managing to "catch" one of the birds, one of the previously dimmed texts will appear.

Online-verk publicerat 2008. Huvudsakligt tema: naturen. När verket laddar uppenbarar sig ett citat: "It's not safe out here. It's wondrous." Dimman lättar och ett ensamt träd blir synligt, en fågelflock skingras. Ett djupt mullrande växer. Vid försök att klicka på fåglarna så aktiveras olika texter. Vid lyckad "fångst" av en fågel så blir en av de tidigare oläsbara texterna tydlig.

Online work, in two parts + intro. Main themes: science fiction, nature. First published in 2006 by danish website Afsnit P. In the intro two books are slowly rotating, when clicking on them they each lead to one of the main parts of the piece: The Path of the Fragment and The Prime Directive. The images and texts in these are of a dark sci-fi nature, the soundtrack ambient and droney.

När betraktaren/ läsaren klickar på dessa så leder de vidare till verkets två huvuddelar: Fragmentets Flyktväg resp. Primärdirektivet. Bilderna och texterna i dessa är av mörk sci-fi karaktär, ljudspåret ambient och långsamt svepande.
