Scrolling Landscapes (2020) is a three-channel work of net art that explores the relationship among nostalgia and our perception of technologically mediated landscapes. For the virtual iteration of the ELO 2020 conference, the work will be presented in a web format with three continuously running video channels. Each film in the series was created by appropriating footage of speedruns of older 8-bit video games and then editing together their scrolling landscapes to produce unfolding Rorschach patterns of gameworlds. These landscapes have then been corrupted using glitch techniques to generate psychedelic abstractions that rapidly accelerate through two-dimensional space. With each film in the series, the same landscape is multiplied and arranged so that the scrolling patterns become increasingly complex. Through the viewer’s interfacing with these retro visions of technology, the web version serves to challenge the knowledge that underlies our perception of scrolling motion. In this way, the work operates through a kind of post-gaming, or rather, it considers the medium of interactive gaming (and particularly the mechanics of scrolling) not through functionality, utility, or its capacities to offer incentive and reward, but as a pure aesthetic form; sensual pleasures derived from the dynamics of abstract patterns composed of pixels, tiles, and color palettes.

Newscomic recycles the news, re-mixes it, subverts and distorts it.
It takes live news feeds (RSS feeds) from major news sources, chops them up at random and puts the resultant text into speech bubbles in a comic. The comic illustrations reflect the current latest news, and are regularly updated to keep up with the news. The result is a disjointed comic, where the words and pictures don't quite fit but make their own story.

Often the story is quite surreal, but can by chance make sense, and even be quite revealing.
To make the story more fun, you can contribute by adding your own words and sentences (up to a hundred characters long). These replace the word 'the' and other characters in the speech text. You can use this to perhaps get your own views across, or to manipulate the story so it makes more sense to you. Your word or sentence is stored and seen by the world until the next person comes along, and adds their words, replacing yours.

The result is a unique combination of a disjointed news reader, and a live comic story builder. It enables you to get the gist of the latest news, and at the same time enjoy a surreal comic, one that you have contributed to.

The RSS feeds currently used are as follows:
Showbiz --> Daily Mail (TV/ Showbiz)
News --> Guardian (UK latest)
Politics --> BBC (UK Politics)
Football --> BBC (UK Football)
Arts --> Guardian (Arts)

Shade is an experiment in surrealism and psychological fear. It begins as a classic “room escape” scenario; but that’s not how it ends.

Play Shade if you’re in the mood for a short trip into an uncertain, shifting environment that might just be a nightmare. (Description from eblong.com)
