media art

Description (in English)

In 2018, TOPO is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and its 20th anniversary of involvement in creation and dissemination of digital art. The Montreal artist-run centre TOPO is a laboratory for digital writings and creations for web, performance, and installation spaces. Its mandate is to incubate, produce, and circulate original multimedia artworks that explore interdisciplinary and intercultural hybridizations in the digital arts.It was through exploration of interactive narrative that the founders of TOPO – artists Michel Lefebvre and Eva Quintas – introduced TOPO to new-media circles in January 1998. A memorable ice storm had just ravaged Montréal when the FM network of Radio-Canada broadcasted a web-radio version of the three episodes of the photo-novel Liquidation, a first in Québec. This major pluri-media project, finalized in 2001 in the form of random fiction on CD-ROM, gave a foretaste of the organization’s orientations: collective creation, a multidisciplinary focus, exploration of various supports and narrative forms for new media, and extension of practices on the network into the public space and vice versa. TOPO presents a journey through 20 years of experimentation with the narrative potentials of interactive media through a selection of collective web artworks produced by more than 100 artists from the visual and media arts, theatre, audio, and literature. To this body of work have gradually been added performances and installations highlighting different disciplines, along with various staging processes and technological devices. The goal is to explore the dynamics of the back-and-forth between what is on screen and what is off screen.

Abstract (in English)

In this paper, I depart from the notion of digital literature trying to look beyond the linguistic layer of digitability as proposed by Simanovski (2010). Thus, the main goal of my discussion is to face some specific problems regarding both theoretical and instructional perceptions of digital literature: the creative process, the technological conditions and software limits in the production of a media art object, and the literary materialities digitally present. To demonstrate how these constructs and circumstances affect the production and the reception of an object perceived as literary and digital from its planning, I will propose a challenging reading of O Cosmonauta by Alckmar dos Santos and Wilton Azevedo.

Description (in English)

Death Of An Alchemist is a multimedia novel written by Big Data—a detective story generated in real-time from live online content. The installation consists of an 8m wall displaying 128 pages of projected text, symbols and charts. This content is generated by scraping Twitter, Google and social platforms for today’s headlines, social media conversations, memes and more. The text flickers and updates as new data is received, yet still creates a coherent narrative that can be read from beginning to end. This is thanks to a bespoke technique we have termed the “poetics of search”: using a combination of search operators and algorithms to mine data, then string manipulation to fit it cohesively into a new plot. In the story, readers investigate the death of 16th century alchemist Trithemius. He has left behind a supposedly magical book, Steganographia, said to reveal the “clavis magna”: the idea from which all knowledge flows. Readers must decode the book to find the clues to Trithemius’ murder. But this is no ordinary leather-bound volume… The work is an extended allegory for coercive uses of Big Data by technology companies such as Google and Facebook, which aim to create their own “clavis magna”. Death of an Alchemist is an official selection of the 2015 International Symposium on Electronic Art, to be held in Vancouver, Canada. It is also being made available as a free iOS/Android app. (source: ELO 2015 catalog)

Abstract (in English)

In this interview Dene Grigar tells about her approach to electronic literature in the early 1990s and about her work as curator for the exhibit "Electronic Literature and Its Emerging Forms" in 2015. She goes on describing some distinguishing features of electronic literature and explaining her 'conceptual shift' on regard to the way of working with computers. Finally she suggests some methods of analysis for the understanding of electronic literature for both academic scholars and mainstream audience.

Short description

Since the very beginning of art ‘techne’ has been a substantial part of ‘poeisis’. The complex technologies of today create a particularly compelling and provocative frame for expressing artistic ideas. Media/ techno/ hybrid art is currently one of the most promising kinds of art that enriches art with most recent developments in science, robotics, electronics, telecommunication and bio technologies. Interacting with the objects and whole environments, the viewer is empowered to relate to the works in multiple ways and is intuitively immersed into the problematic field of contemporary technological culture. The unique modes of sensory engagement, when visual perception is closely tied with auditory and tactile, suggest new paradigms of cognition and proprioception. While internationally the media arts practice is supported by wide range of industries and governmental institutes, in Russia the development of this field is still sporadic. The exhibition “Art Focus for Technologies: Charm and Challenge” is intended to introduce to Ekaterinburg audience and the city’ guests some of the most important issues of international media art practice and to instigate further discussions, research and practice in this science- and technology-rich region. The exhibition is organized within the strategic program of EB NCCA “Art. Science. Technology” and will include works by Russian, German, Austrian, French, Dutch, and Swedish artists that deal with the ideas of optics, acoustics, interactivity, robotics, virtual realities, and performativity. The pieces will give a witty response to the current state of media consumerism, create sensory provocations and metaphoric interpretations of scientific facts, reflect upon the social and urban structures, as well as present interfaces for more nuanced and intimate communication. A number of works are commissioned specifically for this event. Participating artists: Sonia Cillari (IT/NL), (RU), Arijana Kajfes (SE), Andrey Khazov/ Sergej Novik (RU), Julius Popp (DE), Denis Perevalov/ Nina Rizhskaya/ Igor Sodazot (RU), Alexei Shulgin/ Aristarkh Chernyshov (RU), Christa Sommerer (AT)/ Laurent Mignonneau (FR), Where the Dogs Run (Olga Inozemtseva, Natalia Grekova, Alexei Korzukhin, Vladislav Bulatov, RU). In conjunction with the exhibition there will be organized a series of lectures and workshops by the invited participants. The works of the exhibitions will be documented in a special publication (catalogue). “Innoprom 2011” is one of the largest exhibitions and forums of advanced technologies developed in Russia, which is organized with the purpose to facilitates the spreading of the best innovation practices and developing connections between industrial enterprises and technology developers. The exhibition “Art Focus for Technologies: Charm and Challenge” will be become a valuable and very special addition to the project. Selected pieces of the exhibition can also be put on view at other venues of the city for longer time.

Short description
