Abstract (in English)

To date, all formal, technical, and typological analyses of electronic literature (and poetry) that I am aware of have approached the domain from both obvious angles: theory-led and from-the-text. The former has yielded traditional literary analyses such as (Aarseth 1997) and (Hayles 2007) while the latter more recently has yielded analyses such as (Di Rosario 2011) and (O’Sullivan 2016). Taking our cue from informatics we could if we so wished analyse works of electronic literature using the theoretical foundation of computer science: finite automata. What is being suggested here is not the theoretical analysis of the electronic arts through the lens of Turing Machines or alternately the lambda calculus/type theory. Rather, what is being suggested is replacing the symbol with the lexeme thus alighting on the idea of lexical automata. Semiotically speaking, finite automata operate on sets of unrestricted symbols whereas surely it must be agreed that literary works are lexically constrained therefore electronic literary works must be in the final analysis characterised by lexical automata. This work is an attempt to show how the analysis of electronic literary works so understood and explored yields fruitful results. What is meant by hybrid writing forms? Precisely this; the blending of unstructured and structured data. A word of caution: unstructured here does not mean devoid of all structure, it means yet-to-structured – this may appear to be a pedantic stipulation but it is one that will serve us well. Natural language here is taken to be unstructured. This is in contrast to the linked records and fields of structured data – what we know to be true, digitally represented. Not all literary works are works of fiction, thus at some level we will need to understand what it means to blend unstructured and structured data. Surprisingly little work has been carried out in this regard, notwithstanding the exemplar studies of (Eriksson 2007) and (Nešić 2010). The core idea here is to somehow combine Semantic Web technologies with the text. Each of these studies (and others) examines a variant of that. Building atop the base layer of Peircean semiotics is the most natural way for carrying out this task I propose. The resultant mixture is called semetext, it can be viewed if one wants as an extension of hypertext; indeed, explicit in the wider literature, though not acted upon, is the recommendation that if we replace the hyperlink with something that carries typed information something like what is being suggested here would emerge. Short description

On Thursday, 10 November 2016, the 8th International ITIS Information and Information Technology Conference was held at the Hotel Šmarjeta in Šmarješke Toplice, which is organized every year in November by the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto (FIS).

A number of interesting topics of rapidly developing interdisciplinary sciences in the field of computer science and social sciences were presented to the gathered audience, experts from the academy and entrepreneurship, who in one way or another deal with information and communication technologies (ICT).

The conference was attended by four keynote speakers: Prof. dr. Marko Bohanec from the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana lectured on the topic of data mining for decision support, doc. dr. Luka Kronegger from the Ljubljana Faculty of Social Sciences presented a sociological analysis of Slovenian science. Doc. dr. Lovro Šubelj from the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of Ljubljana spoke about the analysis of scientific databases, doc. dr. Robert Kopal from the College of Algebra in Zagreb presented the analysis of social networks to the gathered people in order to ensure state security.

In addition to the above mentioned, a number of interesting guests were presented at the conference, which was held in the English and Slovenian languages, among which is prof. dr. Borut Rončević (FIS) presented the InnoHPC project, the Vice-rector for Informatization of the University of Rijeka, prof. dr. Zlatan Car, a supercomputer Bura, this year's important acquisition of the university's university. Prof. dr. Andreas Hinz from LMU Munich lectured on the interweaving of mathematics and psychology, dr. Ciril Petr (IMFM Ljubljana) on computer experiments with hanoi graphs.

There were also current contributions. prof. dr. Blaž Rodič (FIS), who explained to the gathering about the modeling of international migrant flows, mag. Marko Potokar (Institute for Computer Forensics) talked about the use of ICT for supervision and employee safety, doc. dr. Tomaž Aljaž (FIS) presented the use of agile methodologies for greater efficiency in project implementation.

The 8th International Conference ITIS was officially concluded by the Dean of the FIS, prof. dr. Dejan Jelovac, followed by a relaxed gathering of participants at the dinner party.

The sponsors of the event were ITAD and In2data, which the organizer, the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto, also sincerely thanks in this place.

V četrtek, 10. novembra 2016, se je v Hotelu Šmarjeta v Šmarjeških Toplicah odvila že 8. mednarodna konferenca Informacijske družbe in informacijskih tehnologij ITIS, ki jo vsako leto v novembru organizira Fakulteta za informacijske študije v Novem mestu (FIŠ).

Zbranemu občinstvu, strokovnjakom iz akademije in podjetništva, ki se tako ali drugače ukvarjajo z informacijsko-komunikacijskimi tehnologijami (IKT), so bile predstavljene različne zanimive in aktualne teme hitro razvijajočih se interdisciplinarnih ved s področja računalništva in družboslovja.

Na konferenci so predavali štirje glavni govorniki ("Keynote speakers"): Prof. dr. Marko Bohanec z ljubljanskega Inštituta Jožef Stefan je predaval na temo podatkovnega rudarjenja za podporo odločanju, doc. dr. Luka Kronegger z ljubljanske Fakultete za družbene vede predstavil sociološko analizo slovenske znanosti. Doc. dr. Lovro Šubelj z ljubljanske Fakultete za računalništvo in informatiko je govoril o analizi znanstvenih baz podatkov, doc. dr. Robert Kopal z Visoke šole Algebra v Zagrebu pa je zbranim predstavil analizo družbenih omrežij z namenom zagotavljanja državne varnosti.

Poleg omenjenih se je na konferenci, ki je potekala v angleškem in slovenskem jeziku, predstavilo še kar nekaj zanimivih gostov, med drugim je prof. dr. Borut Rončević (FIŠ) predstavil projekt InnoHPC, prorektor za informatizacijo Univerze na Reki, prof. dr. Zlatan Car pa superračunalnik Bura, letošnjo pomembno pridobitev reške univerze. Prof. dr. Andreas Hinz iz LMU Munich je predaval o prepletanju matematike in psihologije, dr. Ciril Petr (IMFM Ljubljana) pa o računalniških eksperimentih s hanojskimi grafi.

Aktualni so bili tudi prispevki izr. prof. dr. Blaža Rodiča (FIŠ), ki je zbranim razlagal o modeliranju mednarodnih migrantskih tokov, mag. Marko Potokar (Inštitut za računalniško forenziko) je govoril o uporabi IKT za nadzor in varnost zaposlenih, doc. dr. Tomaž Aljaž (FIŠ) pa je predstavil uporabo agilnih metodologij za večjo učinkovitost pri izvajanju projektov.

8. mednarodno konferenco ITIS je slovesno zaključil dekan FIŠ, prof. dr. Dejan Jelovac, sledilo pa je še sproščeno druženje udeležencev konference ob večerji.

Digital technologies have begun to affect the activity of creating poetry. This development does not threaten to supplant poetry in its written, oral, and other senses. Rather, it holds the potential to accentuate and extend its capabilities. My study discusses historical and mechanical issues related to literature and digital media, exposing how approaches to the creation of poetic texts are evolving as writing (in part) becomes machine-modulated. Aiming to chronicle the opening period of cybertext, these essays intend to expand the discourse and illustrate aesthetic properties of digital text. Theodor Holm Nelson invented the concept of hypertext in the 1960s. Hypertext, to Nelson, meant branching texts and "non-sequential writing." It is a specialized mode of multi-layered reading and writing enabling the integration of digital texts. My study advances hypertext by adopting the term cybertext to include other digital forms and possibilities. It continues the work of developing a vocabulary bridging poetry and cybertext, discussing contemporary theory and practice in this discipline. Cybertext poetry crafts language to integrate lyrical, alphabetic, and visual representations in a task of both building and unearthing what is inside a text. Cooperative use of computers, networks, and software are understood to extend the purposes, concerns, and visibility of poetry through electronic gateways, yet the overall status of the form is rudimentary. Conceptualizations of computerized texts and digital literary output to-date, especially in the area of poetry, are my primary focus here; this is a broad introduction to the making(s) of these texts. Multiple cybertext poems are introduced in order to derive a broadly informed poetics for this mechanically interconnected form. Removed from certain particulars, such as which software programs are "best" (or even which individual works are most successful), this study analyzes and evaluates cybertext with the objective of adding a lasting sense of what areas are worth a poet's pursuit amidst the new technologies. In 1962, MIT scientist Steve Russell presented one of the first videogames in history: Spacewar! in which two starships maneuvered around a star and tried to destroy each other. A year earlier, Raymond Queneau had published Cent mille milliards de poèmes, a potential literature book consisting of ten sonnets printed onto cards, with each line written on a separate strip, offering readers 100 trillions of possible combinations.

At first glance, the connection between these two milestones from worlds as different as literature and computer science would seem to be remote, but they are actually the start of a convergence of experiences and interests that have radically changed the way we read and write stories.

The sixties marked the start of a series of experiments in both literature and computing that mutally influenced each other and challenged the narrative, physical and conceptual boundaries of literature. This text looks at some of these connections.

This article has aims on mapping and analyzing aspects of computer science, on how they affect creation, aesthetic reception and operating mode of digital poetry. Specifically, it means to look at the programming language as part of the creation and constitution of the digital literary work, as that which stands behind what is shown to the reader, as a restriction and potentiality of creation, and as a signifier in a construction that has its own materiality as a giver of meaning And finally, it intends on comprehending up to what point the knowledge of these modes and mediums are necessary for both the creation and reception of the digital literary works.

Este artigo tem como objetivo mapear e analisar alguns aspectos da ciência da computação, quais sejam, no como afetam a criação, fruição estética e modo de operar da poesia digital. Especificamente, trata-se de olhar a linguagem de programação como parte da criação e constituição da obra literária digital, como aquilo que está por trás do que é mostrado ao leitor, como uma restrição e potencialidade da criação, e enquanto um fator significante em uma construção que tem sua própria materialidade como doadora de sentido. Por fim, trata-se de tentar compreender até que ponto o conhecimento desses modos e meios são necessários tanto para criação quanto para fruição das obras literárias digitais.

Abstract (in English)

This study centers around computer–based literature and texts that are gen-erated by algorithmic means. It originates from the obvious deficiencies of thecategories used by literary and media scientists to classify and analyze theobject in question.The leading thesis is that current methods and theories substantially relyon but scarcly reflect a certain media–technology: the book. According tothis the study starts with the fundamental terms of computer science: storage,transmission and computation as the basic categories for analysing computerbased texts and literature.The chapter "‘Funktionen"’ explains these terms technically and correlatesthem with functions within the traditional “book–based” literary system. Thechapter "‘Formen"’ checks their scope concerning formal categorisation of se-lected examples. Presented are not only current hypertexts but also literaryCD–ROMs and text generating programs. Im Zentrum dieser literaturwissenschaftlichen Studie stehen computerbasierteLiteratur und algorithmisch generierte Texte. Ausgangspunkt ist das offensicht-liche Ungenügen literatur– aber auch medienwissenschaftlicher Kategorien fürdie Klassifikation und Analyse dieses Gegenstandsbereichs.Die leitende These ist, daß die einschlägigen Methoden und Theorien we-sentlich aber weitgehend unreflektiert auf eine bestimmte Medientechnikre-kurrieren: das gebundene Buch. Dementsprechend setzt diese Arbeit die in-formatischen Grundbegriffe des Speicherns, Übertragens und Berechnens alsfundamentale Kategorien für die Analyse computerbasierter Texte und Litera-tur zugrunde.Im Kapitel „Funktionen“ werden diese Begriffe technisch expliziert und zuden Funktionen des traditionellen, um das Buch zentrierten Literatursystemsin Beziehung gesetzt. Das Kapitel „Formen“ überprüft die Mächtigkeit dieserDreiteilung für eine formale Kategorisierung einer Reihe ausgewählter Beispie-le. Vorgestellt werden nicht nur aktuelle Hypertexte, sondern auch Literatur–CDs und textgenerierende Programme.
