Abstract (in English)

This is a talk about police. The text is read by Alex from A dictionary of the revolution, a multi-media project that attempted to document the evolving language of the 2011 Egyptian revolution.

The project's digital publication contains 125 texts, woven from the voices of hundreds of people who were asked to define words used frequently in conversations in public from 2011-2014. Material for the dictionary was collected in Egypt from March to August 2014.

Nearly 200 participants reacted to vocabulary cards containing 160 terms, talking about what the words meant to them, who they heard using them, and how their meanings had changed since the revolution. The text of the dictionary is woven from transcription of this speech.

The project's digital publication is accessible in Arabic and English translation at http://qamosalthawra.com. The website also gives access to an archive of edited sound clips, images, and transcriptions.

A dictionary of the revolution won the 2019 Public Library Prize for Electronic Literature, the 2018 New Media Writing Prize, and the 2017 Artraker Award for Changing the Narrative.

Pale Fire [...] reality is neither the subject nor the object of true art which creates its own special reality having nothing to do with the average "reality" perceived by the communal eye. Vladimir Nabokov, Pale Fire Vladimir Nabokov's 1962 novel, Pale Fire, is widely considered a forerunner of postmodernism and a prime example of the literature of exhaustion. The novel has four distinct sections. The first is a "Forward" by a man who calls himself Charles Kinbote. Kinbote, who claims to be a scholar from the country of Zembla, relates how he befriended the American poet John Shade. Following Shade's untimely death, Kinbote was entrusted with the manuscript of the poet's last major work, a long autobiographical poem called "Pale Fire." Despite the many reservations of others concerning his authority to do so, Kinbote has edited the work for publication. The second section is the poem itself, divided into four cantos. It is followed by the third, and longest section, Kinbote's own idiosyncratic commentary and line by line glosses. The fourth section is an index in which Kinbote provides brief capsule descriptions of the major people and places of the text and its accompanying commentary. The novel, however, is something more than a satiric look at the solipsistic excesses of academic exegesis. Kinbote's commentary gradually transforms the heterogenous elements of the text into a labyrinth of dazzling complexity. Kinbote's status as a reliable narrator is subverted early in the book; by the end of the Forward, we suspect him to be something of an opportunist who has made off with Shade's manuscript before the grieving widow can gather her wits. His commentary supports this suspicion. Shade's poem seems to be a fairly straightforward bit of personal reminiscence, as unmarked by worldly concerns as it is by any hint of literary talent. Bending every word of Shade's poem to ludicrous extremes, however, Kinbote proceeds to unfold the story of the overthrow of the last King of Zembla, Charles II. The story of Shade's composition of the poem is made parallel to the story of the approach of an assassin named Gradus who is coming to America to slay the exiled King. Subtly, Kinbote's identity begins to merge with his stories of Charles II, even as Shade's poem is gradually co-opted by the Commentary. Kinbote, it appears, may in fact be the exiled King, using Shade's poem as a means of telling his own story. However, even this possibility begins to slip away as a third and almost invisible narrator, a Russian emigré named Botkin, makes his way into the narrative, raising the possibility that the whole thing, Kinbote, Zembla, Charles II, Gradus, even Shade's poem itself, might be the elaborate creation of this other figure. Critics have spilled no small amount of ink trying to figure who is the true author of this text, which of these layers of story-telling is the real and which the fictional. In so doing they have unwittingly swallowed Nabokov's bait; there can be no strict hierarchical ordering of these narratives because each is as "real" as the other. Or, to be more precise, each is as fictional as the other--Nabokov is openly toying with the desire to see reality as anything but a fictional construct. Writers and readers of hypertext fiction will find much of interest in Nabokov's comic novel. Like Pavic's Dictionary of the Khazars, Nabokov foregoes the traditional form of the novel in favour of one usually seen as antithetical to narrative. The "Authoritative Edition" format of academic publishing allows Nabokov to re-think the conventions of the realist novel. His tale blurs the traditional distinctions between editor and manuscript, and between narrator and tale, in order to comment ironically on the very processes of reading and interpretation. As with a hypertext, the reader at first moves back and forth between Shade's manuscript and Kinbote's commentary, hoping to find the "truth" of this text by a close comparison of the two texts. However, this desire for closure is rapidly exhausted, as the reader realizes that each point of comparison, each link that is pursued, only takes him or her deeper and deeper into the open-ended web of Nabokov's design. Pale Fire instantiates many of the formal mechanisms of hypertext--its use of disparate materials connected together through an associative logic of links and anchors--only in order to signal the dangers of using these mechanisms to pursue the same old dreams of univocity and fixed meaning. This is the first HTML adaptation of a short story first published on ten loose sheets of paper in the so-called "envelope novel" Sesam 71  which Bringsværd published with Jon Bing in 1971. The story is told in the form of a cross-referenced dictionary giving definitions of words that describe a dystopic future world where over-population has become so extreme that each story of a house is built so that the ceiling can be lowered as there is need for more room. The title plays upon this, and in translation means something like, "Damn. They just lowered the ceiling height again. Must remember to buy new knee protectors." This is the example given to explain usage of the word "faen" in the dictionary. 

The publication year of 1996 is approximate. A second version was made in 1999 by Marius Watz, and this simple HTML version definitely predates Watz' version.

The original "envelope novel" that the 1971 paper version was part of is part of the Norwegian National Library's digitised collection, and is openly accessible to readers with Norwegian IP addresses.

This work was made in response to a call by Metamute (London) for Jam Echelon Day 2001. It simply employs all the words stored in the Echelon system in a program that automatically generates texts using whatever dictionary it has available.

Whenever a user moves their mouse over a text it will automatically re-write itself as a new text. It will then e-mail that text to a random e-mail address (this last e-mailing component of the work is currently disabled, but will be enabled by the artist at the appropriate time - the effect will be to flood the net with echelon sensitive messages at the rate of hundreds per minute, depending on user interaction).

Echelon is the worldwide signals intelligence network run by the US National Security Agency and the UK Government Communications Headquarters in collaboration with Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Echelon uses large ground-based radio antennae in the United States, Italy, the UK, Turkey, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and several other countries to intercept satellite transmissions and some surface traffic, as well as employing satellites to tap transmissions between cities.

Echelon is reportedly capable of interecepting large portions of the world's communications, including phone conversations, email and SMS. It uses dictionaries to search for keywords that various security services consider to be of interest. Under the ECHELON system, a particular station's dictionary computer contains not only its parent agency's chosen keywords, but also a list for each of the other four agencies. Each station collects all the telephone calls, faxes, telexes, emails, internet traffic and other communications that pass through it and compares them against this list of keywords.

This work uses similar software to that used in Babel, another 3D multi-user internet piece by the artist. Viewers logged in to the work are confronted with a 3D visualisation of a space formed as a receding array of words. As the viewer moves the mouse around the screen they are able to navigate this 3D environment. If the viewer types a word on their keyboard then when they press the RETURN key that word will appear in their own 3D array (the white words). Continuing to do this will cause the words to cascade through the array. These words are also broadcast to all the other viewers logged on (along with the viewers mouse coordinates, allowing each viewers 3D location to be calculated) such that everybody can read what the viewer has written. All the viewers are thus able to see what all the other viewers, who are simultaneously logged onto the site, are seeing. The multiple 3D views of the word-space are montaged together into a single shared image, where the actions of any one viewer effects what all the other viewers see.

When two or more word-arrays intersect with one another the words that form the array are randomly juggled, over writing any viewer defined words. The dictionary of words available to the software has been appropriated from the NASA website, detailing a glossary of terms used in astronomical sciences.
