Final Fantasy VI,[a] also known as Final Fantasy III from its marketing for its initial North American release in 1994, is a role-playing video game developed and published by Japanese company Square for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Final Fantasy VI, being the sixth game in the series proper, was the first to be directed by someone other than producer and series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi; the role was filled instead by Yoshinori Kitase and Hiroyuki Ito. Yoshitaka Amano, long-time collaborator to the Final Fantasy series, returned as the character designer and contributed widely to visual concept design, while series-regular, composer Nobuo Uematsu, wrote the game's score, which has been released on several soundtrack albums. Set in a fantasy world with a technology level equivalent to that of the Second Industrial Revolution, the game's story follows an expanding cast that includes fourteen permanent playable characters. The drama includes and extends past depicting a rebellion against an evil military dictatorship, pursuit of a magical arms-race, use of chemical weapons in warfare, depiction of violent, apocalyptic confrontations with Divinities, several personal redemption arcs, teenage pregnancy, and the continuous renewal of hope and life itself.

Final Fantasy VI was released to critical acclaim and is seen as a landmark title for the role-playing genre; for instance, it was ranked as the 2nd best RPG of all time by IGN in 2017. Its SNES and PlayStation versions have sold over 3.48 million copies worldwide to date as a stand-alone game, as well as over 750,000 copies as part of the Japanese Final Fantasy Collection and the North American Final Fantasy Anthology. Final Fantasy VI has won numerous awards and is considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all time.

It was ported by Tose with minor differences to Sony's PlayStation in 1999 and Nintendo's Game Boy Advance in 2006, and it was released for the Wii's Virtual Console in 2011. In 2017, Nintendo re-released Final Fantasy VI as part of the company's Super NES Classic Edition.[1] The game was known as Final Fantasy III when it was first released in North America, as the original Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, and Final Fantasy V had not been released outside Japan at the time (leaving IV as the second title released outside Japan and VI as the third). However, most later localizations use the original title.

Aphiddd was inspired, rather fittingly, by another poem I wrote many years ago about a friendship that I felt had become dependent, even parasitic in nature, largely without me even noticing.

The work developed as if the older poem were the ‘host’, the plundered source material – which made for an interesting writing and editing process.

The idea to use photo-scanned plants and materials as part of the work came from spending time outdoors during the autumn/winter months and seeing plants, leaves and barks deteriorating. The colours at times were spectacular and beautiful, despite the nature of what was happening.

Technical notes

Aphiddd is a browser-based digital poem that uses a series of photo scanned natural textures/shapes and animated texts to uncover the nature of a parasitic human connection. Aphiddd requires a contemporary web browser, a computer with a graphics card, and may take some time to download and unpack. Once loaded, use the mouse and your mouse’s scroll wheel (or the arrow keys on the keyboard and R+F to zoom in and out) to explore the poem. The poem is comprised of 3 sections. There is also an optional Android app version available.

Yuefu is a poetry generation system using OpenAI’s GPT, a Generative Pre-Trained natural language model pretrained on Chinese newspapers, that is fine-tuned with classical Chinese poetry. The developers write in their paper describing the system that it does not use "human crafted rules or features," or "any additional neural components". The system can generate poems in various formal, classical styles.

The example shown is translated by Ru-Ping Cheng and Jeff Ding for the ChinAI newsletter. It is an example of Cang Tou Shi, a Chinese version of acrostic poems. "In this case," the translator explains, "the first words of each line form the title of the poem: 神经网络 (neural networks)." Some other examples of the system's output are shown in a preprint published by the system's creators, and a translation of a Chinese newspaper article (entered into ELMCIP) provides translations of more examples.

"Some apps claim to increase your reading speed. We propose precisely the opposite:

How about reading Ulysses... with your fingers?

Through 4 episodes of increasing difficulty, your challenge is to wrestle with the text of James Joyce's monumental work, both mentally and physically.

By the end of your odyssey, you will have read up to four pages and 100 sentences chosen from throughout the novel. Your fingers' dexterity will have increased by an exponential factor, and your point of view on Modernist literature and experimental apps will have changed forever.

Note that He Liked Thick Word Soup differs depending whether played on a phone or a tablet. We recommend experiencing both versions!"

In Jilly Dreadful's hypertext work The Spectral Dollhouse, the death scenes are staged; the blood is (presumably) fake; and the owner of the house is, or was, a doll; and yet it looked like we'd seen ghosts after ouiji-ing our way through this work, which in the author's words, investigates "the literary oppression that women face in regards to the procreation of their stories and bodies" as well as the question of whether (and/or how) photography is representational of reality. In a way, though, we had seen ghosts, as Dreadful admits, "fiction haunts nonfiction," resulting in a piece that balances sure-footedly on the line where truth and artifice abut one another, with Dreadful taking handfuls of each to make one replete with the other.

Aaron Oldenberg gives new meaning to the phrase "bird's eye view" in Towa Towa, his visually-striking work of digital art steeped in Guyanese and Trinidadian culture. In addition to the whimsical fun of the challenge viewers take on as the presiding judges of bird debates, what strikes us about Towa Towa is its heavy emphasis on viewer involvement. Instead of voyeur, the viewer's role is of active participant, allowing for a more complete–if only digital–form of cultural immersion.

Rediscovering Springfield will be an art-type walk that is a site-specific exhibition using mobile devices and printed items to unearth content by walking along Main Road Moonah. Rediscovering Springfield will be a project that engages with the community of Springfield and the greater Moonah area in Hobart, Tasmania.

The work Rediscovering Springfield will add another chapter in the history of Tasmania. It will share the personal untold stories from migrants who came to Tasmania in the mid 20th Century onwards. Their contribution to the building and adding to this state is not often talked about or acknowledged in Tasmaniaʼs history.

The work will investigate how they communicated, what they brought with them, how their concept of home and food was re-created and experienced in their new “home” in Australia. How they shared their culture with other communities, how they spoke with one another, especially as many of them didn’t speak fluent English, if at all, on their arrival. How does one negotiate a space one does not understand fully?

These are some of the questions Rediscovering Springfield will explore – we can consider how did they navigate their lives through their new foreign home? Those who speak English natively will gain insight into this day-to-day experience of the new migrant.

The work will be realised by encouraging community involvement, through the exploration of people’s personal archives of the area or street – including photos, audio, etc. realised as moving images plus video and audio interviews.
