An anthology of Portuguese experimental poetry, focusing on visual poetry. The collection includes several authors and works, e.g. Silvestre Pestana's Computer Poetry series (1981-83), programmed in BASIC on a ZX-81 and Spectrum. The book's cover is a photograph of the original work displayed on a TV screen.
According to its author, Agnus Valente, “Uterus therefore Cosmos” is a kind of work in progress developed during the years 2003 to 2007. In this project, several e-poems created by Valente and his twin brother, Nardo Germano, explores the expressive and conceptual potential of the World Wide Web. “Uterus therefore Cosmos” brings together in one digital environment, works by visual artists, poets and musicians from different eras. Valente proposes a dialogue between his poems authored with his brother and the work of brazilian poets and visual artists. ”Uterus therefore Cosmos” is metaphorically a project of astronomical dimensions. Conceived as a trilogy, the project presents in one website its three stages of creation: “Online Pregnancy” (2003), “Constellations” (2005) and “Expansions” (2007). A keyword to analyze this work is “hybridization”. In this context, the term refers to the ability of mixing signs, senses, media and languages and where all this mixing occurs is undoubtedly the digital medium. “Two matchsticks” (2008) is the title of an e-poem by short story writer, Samir Mesquita based on “Two matchsticks,” a popular saying in Brazil. The origins of this Brazilian folk expression are difficult to determine, but its significance indicates the rapid execution of a task. The matchbox is a Brazilian’s old friend. Even with the absence of musical instruments several sambas have been created accompanied only by the cadenced rhythm of these improvised little rattles. Today, in the Internet and microblogging age, the matchboxes inspires new literary genres.

Minicontos Coloridos is a collaborative project conceived by Brazilian journalist, writer and teacher Marcelo Spalding in 2013. The short tales are structurally and conceptually associated with colors in a playful way. To access the stories, the reader should mix the primary RGB colors through a pull down menu available on the website in HTML which hosts the tales interface. The website offers three blending options for each of the three primary colors, totaling 27 short tales. According to the author, the short tale is a micronarrative, with at most a page or a paragraph that had its antecedents in the prose poem and the Chinese fables. However, since the mid-twentieth century the short story has experienced extremely rapid forms from texts of writers like Cortázar, Borges, Kafka. Minicontos Coloridos é uma forma sinestésica de escrever ficção, pois todos os minicontos foram produzidos a partir da cor. São 3 gradações para cada uma das 3 cores primárias da luz (escala RGB), totalizando 27 minicontos. Futuramente a ideia é ampliar para 5 gradações de cada cor, o que totalizaria 125 minicontos. O objetivo principal é fazer com que o leitor tenha uma nova experiência de leitura de ficção, precisando intervir para ler o maior número de textos possíveis. As histórias em si são por vezes trágicas, por vezes irônicas, poucas vezes românticas. Pela extrema concisão e ausência de título, cabe ao leitor buscar nas entrelinhas o desfecho, devendo usar também a cor para dar completude ao sentido das histórias Com experiências como essa buscamos demonstrar que a literatura existe para além dos livros, existe também em ambientes digitais, utilizando para sua construção ferramentas próprias dessas novas mídias. PO.EX (http://po-ex.net) is a digital archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature that began in 2005. This literary database is coordinated by Rui Torres, at the University Fernando Pessoa, in Oporto, Portugal, and was funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia [Foundation for Science and Technology] (FCT) and the European Union, under two main research projects: “CD-ROM da PO.EX: Poesia Experimental Portuguesa, Cadernos e Catálogos” [The PO.EX CD-ROM: Portuguese Experimental Poetry, Notebooks and Catalogues] (2005-2008) and “PO.EX’70-80: Arquivo Digital da Literatura Experimental Portuguesa” [PO.EX’70-80: Digital Archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature] (2010-2013).

A teoria quântica, originariamente concebida como teoria física para ser aplicada à estrutura íntima da matéria e às propriedades paradoxais das micropartículas (electrões, protões, átomos, moléculas), encerra pressupostos filosóficos que abrem uma nova maneira de pensar a realidade. Sabemos o risco que comporta a extrapolação, tantas vezes fantasiosa, desta teoria para outros níveis de organização do real. No entanto, Lothar Schäfer (químico quântico) é peremptório em afirmar que não é só no campo da microfísica que tais propriedades se manifestam: “As moléculas são a base da vida e as moléculas são sistemas quânticos. Todas as coisas, pequenas ou grandes, existem em estados quânticos.” E o matemático Roger Penrose corrobora: “A mecânica quântica está omnipresente mesmo na vida quotidiana, e encontra-se no cerne de muitas áreas de alta tecnologia, incluindo os computadores electrónicos.” Longe a pretensão de invadir um domínio que não é o da nossa competência – são os pressupostos epistemológicos desta teoria que aqui nos importam, não a sua operacionalidade científica. Por isso não levaremos a nossa ousadia muito para além do direito de citar, propondo uma homologia entre o modelo quântico e a teoria do texto, homologia cuja aplicabilidade ao texto gerado por computador se nos afigura particularmente rica de potencialidades. As textualidades inauguradas com o advento da informática, caso do texto virtual, do texto automático, do texto generativo ou do hipertexto, requerem uma correspondente forma outra de encarar o texto e a construção do sentido.

Signagens (Signings) is a series of videopoems (1985-89) developed by E.M. de Melo e Castro with the support of the Portuguese Institute for Distance Learning (IPED) and later by the Open University of Lisbon, in its electronic and digital TV studios. According to Melo e Castro, "this project intended first of all to investigate video possibilities as a new medium for reading poetry. It was meant to be used in classes of literature and of Portuguese language. Very soon I realized that intersemiotic translation of print-based visual and experimental poems was obvious, as video seemed to me a perfect medium for animation of letters and words." Uma vez fundado o Centro de Estudos sobre Texto Informático e Ciberliteratura na Universidade Fernando Pessoa, unidade de investigação transdisciplinar que se propõe desenvolver não apenas uma reflexão teórica mas também uma prática criativa assente nas novas modalidades de texto nascidas com o advento da informática e das novas tecnologias digitais - com particular destaque para o texto automático, o texto dinâmico e o hipertexto - será oportuno explorar aqui uma delimitação definitória destes conceitos no seu âmbito de aplicação.
