The Web site Circulars was founded on January 30, 2003, to provide a focal point for poets’ and artists’ activities and reflections on the impending inva- sion of Iraq along with the politics of the media and civil liberties issues. Its format is a multiauthor weblog, or “blog.”1 The HTML design was based on a generic Movabletype template with customized coding added for the com- ments and archives sections. Original elements of the design included an unambitious header graphic and a Flash insignia—a vertical cylinder of rotat- ing cogs that, when individually clicked, adopt different angles and sizes, courtesy of the freeware Flash site levitated.net—which I superimposed over Guy Debord’s collage map of Parisian flows, “The Naked City,” in reverse black and white (figure 3.1). Circulars was housed as a subsite of my Web site www.arras.net, devoted to new media poetry and poetics, though as a distinct entity. After fifteen years (2003-2016) of documentary field research in the Middle-East as a visual and radio producer and in the continuum of these projects, I propose here a new conceptual crossdisciplinary intuitional analysis tool. Eldorado, Iraq 2017 (Iraqi designed soundscape 2012-2013) is a practice-based, experiential and anthropological cognition system based on three-dimensional virtual reality that proposes cultural immersive sound experience through 3D environment across a country: Iraq.

Description (in English)

Hearts and Minds: The Interrogations Project was developed at the Electronic Visualization Lab (EVL) at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) for the CAVE2™, the next-generation large-scale virtual-reality 320-degree panoramic environment which provides users with the ability to see 3D stereoscopic content in a near seamless flat LCD technology at 37 Megapixels in 3D resolution matching human visual acuity. The CAVE immerses people into worlds too large, too small, too dangerous, too remote, or too complex to be viewed otherwise. This project makes use of the CAVE environment for a multisensory artwork that addresses a complex contemporary problem: as American soldiers are returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is becoming increasingly clear that some of them participated in interrogation practices and acts of abusive violence with detainees for which they were not properly trained or psychologically prepared. This has in turn left many soldiers dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder on their return home, and left many unresolved questions about the moral calculus of using torture as an interrogation strategy in military operations. The project was developed through a unique collaboration between artists, scientists, and researchers from four Universities. The production team includes filmmaker Dr. Roderick Coover, writer Dr. Scott Rettberg, artist and visualization researcher Daria Tsoupikova, computer scientist Arthur Nishimoto, sound designer Mark Partridge, production assistant Mark Baratta, and senior research programmer Lance Long. Dr. Jeffrey Murer of St. Andrews University, Scotland also contributed as a consultant on the project.
