Abstract (in English)

Portuguese Experimental Poetry, claiming to be an avant-garde movement, arose in Lisbon in the mid 60’s. It got its name from the title of a magazine, Cadernos de Poesia Experimental, which became the herald of the movement. Two issues were published, the first in 1964 and the second in 1966, organized by António Aragão and Herberto Hélder. The first issue was presented as anthological, since it included texts not only of Portuguese poets and musicians but also Brazilian, French, Italian and English artists. It also had a section which included poets of several epochs and tendencies, such as Luis de Camões or Quirinus Kuhlmann, representing respectively the mannerist and baroque aesthetics of European poetry.

Since 1982 multilinear and interactive literature has been written in the hypertext media. Until now the authors have been obsessed with traditional literary conventions, which has often made the hypertexts seem rather academic and pretentious. But that may change. During the last five years a new breed of writers have discovered the possibilities on the Internet. They address a wider audience than lecturers and very enthusiastic bibliophiles, in a form that finds a more popular balance between traditional storytelling virtues and the more avant-garde elements. This new tendency can be observed in hyperfictions like The Unknown and on the following pages I will establish how and why it should be possible to make hyperliterature more popular than it is at the present, if writers are willing to move a little further towards the more lay readers. As an example of how this could be happening the conclusion will list what seems to be the main reasons why The Unknown to a higher degree seems to succeed when it comes to capturing the reader without losing any of the experimental edge that is still a part of hypertext due to its modest age.

The impact of hypertext and hypermedia on scholarly editing of our literary legacy, which is increasingly published in electronic formats, has fostered a conceptual shift from the archive as a classified hierarchical collection of texts to the archive as a decentred and reconfigurable network of texts. Another important set of questions concerns new methods for editing and organizing multimodal textualities resulting from combinations of materials and media (graphic, audio, video, digital). The convergent multimodality of digital textuality opens up a new editing and archival space for multimedia and intermedia forms of writing. In the current technological context, innovative and experimental literary forms become relevant, as many of the operations that the machine provides can be found in previous literary practices: from collages and automatic writing to narrative permutations and intermedia poetry. This issue of the journal addresses problems of representing, archiving, and publishing experimental literary forms in digital spaces. The fifth volume of Cibertextualidades includes research papers about processes and methods for representation, preservation, and dissemination of intermedia and multimedia literary practices using digital archival systems.

This international collective monograph brings an understanding of the problematic of changes in artistic communication in the context of the cultural practices of the post-digital era and simultaneously asks new questions about it. This book presents the keystones of electronic literature research that are based, among others, on the digital character of the text, on multisensory reading, playfulness, hypermediality, experimentation and Internet communication. Its aim is also to map digital literature in the cultural environment of Central Europe. Researchers from Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia and Croatia collaborated on the publication. The monograph is a printed textual tapestry of various approaches, theories and perspectives that communicate among themselves, react to each other and together clarify the structure that literature personifies in the new media realm.

Kolektívna monografia prináša nové poznatky a zároveň kladie otázky o problematike zmien v umeleckej komunikácii v kontexte kultúry post-digitálnej doby. Prezentuje piliere výskumu elektronickej literatúry, ktoré okrem iného stoja na digitálnej podstate textu, na multisenzorickom čítaní, hravosti a hypermedialite, experimente a internetovej komunikácii. Cieľom je zároveň zmapovať recepciu digitálnej literatúry v kultúrnom prostredí strednej Európy. Na publikácii participovali bádatelia zo Slovenska, Čiech, Poľska, Slovinska a Chorvátska. Monografia je tlačenou textovou sieťou rôznych prístupov, teórií a hľadísk, ktoré vzájomne komunikujú, reagujú a spoločne dospievajú k osvetleniu štruktúry, ktorú literatúra v novo-mediálnom prostredí zosobňuje.

The aim of ‘PO.EX '70-80: A Digital Archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature’ (http://po-ex.net/) is to represent the intermedia and performative textuality of a large corpus of experimental works and practices in an electronic database, including some early instances of digital literature. This paper shows how the performativity of digital archiving and recoding is explored through the remediation, emulation and recreation of works in the PO.EX archive. Preservation, classification and networked distribution are also discussed as editorial and representational problems within the current database aesthetics in knowledge production. Short description

&NOW is a biennial traveling festival/conference that celebrates writing as a contemporary art form: literary art as it is practiced today by authors who consciously treat their work as a process that is aware of its own literary and extra-literary history, that is as much about its form and materials, language, communities, and practice as it is about its subject matter.

&NOW brings together a wide range of writers who are interested in exploring the possibilities of form and the limits of language and other literary modes and who are interested in literature that emphasizes text as a medium, that investigates the essential emptiness of language, and that articulates an assumption that literary form both reflects and emerges from its location in time, forming multiple associations within competing matrices of power and value.

The &NOW Festival of New Writing remains invested in the idea that aesthetics are political, cultural, and interpersonal, articulating convictions about how the world works, including the literary world. Unlike much literature sold for mass appeal, this is a type of literature that by its nature tends to keep generic and even disciplinary definitions unresolved.

Sometimes called experimental, conceptual, avant-garde, freaky, hybrid, surfiction, inaccessible, radical, slip-stream, neo-baroque, hyperfeminine, afro-futurist, postmodern, self-conscious, paradiscursive, gimmicky, and most especially at this moment in history "innovative," literary art is writing (most often made of words), whose aesthetic often shares an ethos with contemporary concerns and modes of both resistance and exhaustion. This is a literature that often takes its own medium as part of its subject matter and sometimes works against the dominant/dominating assumptions about what literature is and does by employing a variety of linguistic games, slippages, puzzles, parodies, annihilations, needs, historical disjunctions, discursive juxtapositions, visuals, appropriations, spatial play, extra-diagetic codes, and other rhetorical strategies and constraints. Literary art may draw attention to modes of performance, distribution, and reception—from the visual coding of the book and page—to other aspects of literary staging, including the author's identity matrices, as this influences how (and if) a text is perceived and received. Contemporary literary art is as invested in its own medium, materials, practices, and engagement with others as it is engaged with the rest of the world.

By bringing together all kinds of writers who are interested in literature as a contemporary art form, &NOW fosters friendships, love affairs, arguments, new writing projects, collaborations, fabulousness, (sometimes all of these at once), the polar opposite of these previous terms, and of course, the means of its own undoing.
