A curtain of tiny screens quoting from live Internet chat; stories generated by computer programs; narratives generated by their readers; words that disappear or reveal themselves depending on their readers’ position, text that peels off the wall and requires the 'reader' to push it back. How shall we read such moving letters? How do we catch their meaning? How might they make us feel? The conference convenes ten specialists from the USA and Germany to explore these and other questions in depth.

The conference resulted in the collection, Literary Art in Digital Performance: Case Studies and Critical Positions, edited by Francisco J. Ricardo (Conitinuum, 2009).

The Electronic Literature as a Model of Creativity and Innovation in Practice (ELMCIP) research project invited scholars, artists, researchers and performers to its final conference and exhibition. The event, running from Nov. 1-3, 2012, was hosted by Edinburgh College of Art in collaboration with New Media Scotland and University College Falmouth within the framework of the ELMCIP research project. The event was held at Inspace, a purpose-built research and exhibition facility at the University of Edinburgh, fully instrumented to facilitate engagement with developments in new technologies, scientific research and creative practice.

ISEA2010 RUHR, the 16th International Symposium on Electronic Art, took place from 20–29 August 2010 in the cities of Dortmund, Essen and Duisburg. ISEA is one of the most important international festivals for digital and electronic art and was hosted in Germany for the first time, as part of the programme of RUHR.2010, European Capital of Culture. More than eight hundred artists and scientists from over fifty countries came together to present the latest developments in contemporary art and digital culture at the ISEA2010 RUHR exhibitions, lectures, concerts and workshops. The Eighteenth International Symposium on Electronic Art, ISEA2012 Albuquerque: Machine Wilderness is a symposium and series of events exploring the discourse of global proportions on the subject of art, technology and nature. The ISEA symposium is held every year in a different location around the world, and has a 30-year history of significant acclaim. Albuquerque is the first host city in the U.S. in six years. The ISEA2012 symposium will consist of a conference September 19 – 24, 2012 based in Albuquerque with outreach days along the state’s “Cultural Corridor” in Santa Fe and Taos, and an expansive, regional collaboration throughout the fall of 2012, including art exhibitions, public events, performances and educational activities. This project will bring together a wealth of leading creative minds from around the globe, and engage the local community through in-depth partnerships. Machine Wilderness references the New Mexico region as an area of rapid growth and technology alongside wide expanses of open land, and aims to present artists' and technologists' ideas for a more humane interaction between technology and wilderness in which "machines" can take many forms to support life on Earth. Machine Wilderness focuses on creative solutions for how technology and the natural world can sustainably co-exist. The program will include: a bilingual focus, an indigenous thread, and a focus on land and skyscape. Because of our vast resource of land in New Mexico, proposals from artists are being sought that will take ISEA participants out into the landscape. The Albuquerque Balloon Museum offers a unique opportunity for artworks to extend into the sky as well. The lead organizations hosting ISEA2012 are 516 ARTS, The University of New Mexico and The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History. There are a total over 50 partnering organizations to date representing museums, colleges, nonprofit arts organizations, environmental organizations and the scientific and technological communities. The 17th international symposium on electronic art.

The 2012 Electronic Literature Organization Conference will be held June 20-23, 2012 in Morgantown, WV, the site of West Virginia University. In conjunction with the three-day conference, there will be a juried Media Arts Show open to the public at the Monongalia Arts Center in Morgantown and running from June 18-30, 2012. An accompanying online exhibit will bring works from the ELO Conference to a wider audience.

Even if nobody could define print literature, everyone knew where to look for it - in libraries and bookshops, at readings, in class, or on the Masterpiece channel. We have not yet created, however, a consensus about where to find electronic literature, or (for that matter) the location of the literary in an emerging digital aesthetic. Though we do have, in digital media, works that identify themselves as "locative," we don't really know where to look for e-lit, how it should be tagged and distributed, and whether or how it should be taught. Is born digital writing likely to reside, for example, in conventional literature programs? in Rhetoric? Comp? Creative Writing? Can new media literature be remediated? How should its conditions of creation be described? Do those descriptions become our primary texts when the works themselves become unavailable through technological obsolescence? To forward our thinking about the institutional and technological location of current literary writing, The Electronic Literature Organization and West Virginia University's Center for Literary Computing invite submissions to the ELO 2012 Conference.
