Abstract (in English)

This presentation aims to reflect on two labels that have been used to define sets of artefacts born out of the same context but evoking different connotations. I refer to the terms “post-internet” and “post-digital”. Both terms allude to a post-stage, a leap that announces a cultural shift, perceived by artists but difficult to pinpoint and demarcate with precision, a prefix that might refer to ‘after’ (chronologically) as well as ‘beyond’ (spatially); often used to highlight that what has been superseded is the novelty and exceptionality of the internet and digital technology. Actually, these terms address the fact that digital media is no longer a form of mediation but it has become our ontology, though this new form of being is of such a diffuse, complex and assembled nature, not even Haraway could have anticipated it.Triggered by impulses of excess and overindulgence, on the one hand, or sustainability and preservation, on the other, post-internet and post-digital art emerge from a networking and tech-savvy sensibility that has altered the relation between artist, audience, and art object.In particular, I am going to focus on the work of artists that use Instagram as an art gallery for exhibiting their work (Almudena Lobera, Johanna Jaskowska, Lucy Hardcastle) or to sabotage the platform from the inside (Amalia Ulman, Joshua Citarella). Bearing a family resemblance to electronic literature, these works also explore the narrative process in the construction of an artist’s identity, the changing territories of human-machine/artist-spectator interactions and digital-analogue materializations. The art objects they produce can be classified as “phygital”, physical/digital constructs that inhabit, in a myriad of different possibilities of mediation and convergence, the physical and the digital spaces.As artists explore the platform’s potential as exhibition space, advertising site, and conversation aisle, their phygital objects reflect the tensions between a nostalgia for an analogue craftsmanship which rebels against machinic perfection and an interrogation of human creativity that propels us into the future through an ever more profound symbiosis with our technological habitus.

In 1985, Italo Calvino wrote a series of lectures (later published as ‘memos’) in which he proposed six values he deemed crucial to literature as it moved into the next millennium: lightness, quickness, ‘crystal’ exactitude, visibility, multiplicity, and consistency. Though never a writer of electronic literature, Calvino has frequently been associated or referenced in relation to digital works. His 'If on a winter’s night a traveller…' and 'Castle of Crossed Destinies' are often referenced in relation to digital structures (the former’s ‘pumpkin vine’ structure in relation to early hypertext works, and the latter’s infinite-structures in relation to codex/programmable fiction), and his early hypotheses and fictions on computer writers and readers are referenced in relation to contemporary computer writer/reader projects. J.R. Carpenter’s web-based work 'The Gathering Cloud' (2016) (hereafter TGC) exhibits Calvino's values. TGC was commissioned by North East of North (NEoN) in Dundee, UK, in 2016. As well existing as a web-based work, it has also been performed as a poetic work with accompanying graphics and disseminated as a print book. The latter, Carpenter argues, ‘further confuses boundaries between physical and digital, scarcity and waste’. TGC is informed by Howard’s 1803 'Essay on the Modifications of Clouds'. Howard’s ‘frontispiece’ and five ‘plates’ are used in Carpenter’s web-based work. Poetry is then superimposed on these repurposed illustrations. Situated ‘within’ the poetry, animated gif collages play, sometimes due to the reader’s actions or of their own accord. Where Calvino in his memos writes that he considers the virtues of the binary opposites of his values (i.e. weight, lingering, 'flame' exactitude, ambiguity, singularity, and inconsistency) no less compelling, Carpenter’s work suggests that Calvino's values (or rather the absence or removal of their binary opposites) are not only preferable in terms of contemporary literary challenges, but an ethical imperative in relation to environmental impact as it relates to contemporary media, dissemination, and indeed everyday life.In this analysis of TGC, Calvino’s values (i.e. lightness, quickness, etc.) will be discussed in relation to each of the work’s six sections (i.e. the ‘frontispiece’ and five ‘plates’). I argue that there exists a gap in the understanding of Calvino’s influence on contemporary digital literary aesthetics and approaches that is exemplified by TGC.

Programmable computation is radically transforming the contemporary media ecology. What is literature's future in this emergent Programming Era? What happens to reading when the affective, performative power of executable code begins to provide the predominant model for creative language use? Critics have raised concerns about models of affective communication and the challenges a-semantic affects present to interpretive practices. In response, this essay explores links between electronic literature, affect theory, and materialist aesthetics in two works by experimental writer and publisher William Gillespie.

Focusing on the post-digital novel Keyhole Factory and the electronic speculative fiction Morpheus: Bilblionaut, it proposes that: first, tracing tropes of code as affective transmissions allows for more robust readings of technomodernist texts and, second, examining non-linguistic affect and its articulation within constraint-based narrative forms suggests possibilities for developing an affective hermeneutics.

My project was prompted by calls for more in-depth critical interpretations of works of electronic literature; an appreciation of how Gillespie problematises tropes of proximity and distance used to characterise modes of critical reading; and a desire to explain Gillespie's commitment to both conceptual, constraint-based writing practices (facilitated by computational media) and the intentional production of meaningful narrative affect. Ultimately, my analyses showcase Gillespie's countertextual achievement: assembling a network of texts, both electronic and analogue, that functions as a literary ecosystem resistant to the instrumentalism of the neoliberal publishing industry. Gillespie's Spineless Books provides an exemplary model of and working platform for collaborative, conceptual, and countertextual literary writing across media.

What happens to more ‘traditional’ modes of language arts, such as lyric poetry or narrative storytelling, and, more broadly, humans’ ability to read, write, and make meaning, if writing computer code is valued more – based on the financial and cultural capital its authors accrue – than writing literature in ‘natural’, ‘human-only’ languages?

[T] the figure of the isolated and disoriented poet-astronaut in Morpheus: Biblionaut gives a unique spin to debates about literature’s long-term future given the prevalence of short-term perspectives in the contemporary media ecology, the devaluation of writing and criticism with an ever-accelerating publishing cycle, and the benefits and limitations of ‘close’ and ‘distant’ readings.

Morpheus: Biblionaut performs important cultural work by foregrounding concerns about reading’s future in the Programming Era while preparing readers for the challenge of interpreting Keyhole Factory, a conceptual, constraint-based novel that can seem dauntingly esoteric if readers don’t practice both close and hyper readings of the codex book and the digital text and consult the web-work map that constitute the Keyhole Factory textual ecosystem. These three components comprise a larger ‘Work as Assemblage, a cluster of related texts that quote, comment upon, amplify, and otherwise intermediate one another’.

By design, Morpheus: Biblionaut demands deep attention and rewards close, sustained re-readings, which become increasingly significant as the reader picks up on subtle clues about and allusions to Keyhole Factory. Its formal constraints require readers to practise attentive-reading strategies that are at risk in post-digital media environments, while its content prompts readers to read the piece self-reflexively. The senselessness the Biblionaut experiences in the isolating environs of deep space, readers can infer, is akin to the indifference to meaning he experiences in the isolating publishing environs of cyberspace.

And when Keyhole Factory is read as part of an even larger, deliberately designed literary ecosystem, including texts published by Gillespie’s press, Spineless Books provides an exemplary model of and working platform for collaborative, conceptual, and countertextual literary writing across media.

Confronted with a technocapitalistic ‘attention economy’ that undermines both the ‘psychic faculty that allows us to concentrate on an object’ and the ‘social faculty that allows us to take care of this object’ (Stiegler 2013: 81), Gillespie (in a way anticipated by Pessoa) has decided to develop an elaborate literary system enabling him to become a ‘self-effacing’ literary presence.

As a motif, the government’s indifference to the Biblionaut’s reading-and-writing abilities is but one of many incidents in which interpretation is rendered irrelevant by the ontologisation of meaningful human language into affective, but asignifying, forms.

Approaching a literary artwork simply as a technology for producing affective responses in the reader instrumentalises the work, rendering much of its full affective dimension irrelevant (the inevitable modulation of non-linguistic affect into linguistic, and hence, inherently significant forms, for instance). That this message might sound retrograde to those who feel writers working in multiple media should abandon the literary altogether suggests why the readers and writers who believe in the field of electronic literature and the ethico-political importance of sustaining human readability need William Gillespie, DIY publisher and author of affective, meaningful post-digital fictions for the Programming Era.

Simultaneously with the mainstreaming of digital text in the form of e-books and the parallel normalizing of participatory hypertext in the form of social media, we see a growing interest in alternative new forms of printing and book production, including artistic explorations of the book and its cultural historical forms. As part of what has been labeled the post-digital, artists and authors explore dominant and alternative models of digitization in combination with a renewed understanding of the materiality of the book (see e.g. Ludovico 2012, Cramer 2013, Lorusso 2013-, Andersen and Pold 2014). This post-digital literary interest can be understood as an interest in how the materiality of the book is transformed and reinvigorated because of the digital revolution, but also as a critical and media archaeological reflection of the current state of the digital revolution. In this way, the post-digital explores and questions what literary media are becoming after the hype of the digital revolution has passed. In short, it resets the hype before exploring the literary media again and allows us to begin exploring the qualities of the literary across and between media.

As part of such an exploration, this paper will based on both experimental and analytical approaches explore literary platforms such as Ink After Print (Fritsch, Pold et al. 2014) and experimental writing processes such as Datafied Research/Peer-reviewed Newspaper (Jamie Allen, Christian Ulrik Andersen et al. 2014) in order to develop a theoretical concept of literary interaction as a way to describe and conceptualize reading-writing related interaction and interfaces beyond immediate functionality and usability. The concept of literary interaction will be developed from reflections on three interconnected levels:

The media: How combinations of books, screens and online media relate to a post-digital media reflexivity.
The interface: How critical and physical, affective interfaces promote a social and performative reading.
The text: How the combinatory (“uncreative”) writing and the users’ active attempts at creating a syntagmatic reading from metaphoric, metonymic and phatic sign structures result in either meaningful moments where all three levels resonate with the text, or realisations of sheer seriality and randomly generated meaningless-ness, where the output is just the system.

We will aim to relate literary experiences from electronic literature and post-digital publishing to cross-disciplinary concerns around interfaces and interaction. In this way and in relation to the discussion of the changing conditions of digital text we aim to relate to the conference's theme of the end(s) of electronic literature.
