French digital poetry

Description (in English)

The language becomes a graphic space of exploration starting from the poetic expression of the man.

In dialogue with Jacques Donguy, Philippe Boisnard has conceived the exhibition “Poetry of the Post Humanity” from documents and artistic proposals (Thierry Fournier, Beb-deum and 3 holopoems of Augusto de Campos, Eduardo Kac and Richard Kostelanetz), in order to show that avant-garde poetry does not only propose aesthetic forms linked to technique but another apprehension of man, of his becoming imbued with his technical inventiveness.

Le langage devient un espace graphique d’exploration à partir de l’expression poétique de l’homme.

En dialogue avec Jacques Donguy, Philippe Boisnard a pensé l’exposition “Poésie de la Post Humanité” à partir de documents et de propositions artistiques (Thierry Fournier, Beb-deum et de 3 holopoèmes d’Augusto de Campos, d’Eduardo Kac et de Richard Kostelanetz), afin de montrer que la poésie d’avant-garde ne propose pas que des formes esthétiques liées à la technique mais une autre appréhension de l’homme, de son devenir imprégné de son inventivité technique.

Abstract (in English)

This two-part workshop led by Philippe Bootz and Johnathan Baillehache will focus on the history and documentation of French Digital Poetry.

Morning session: History of French digital poetry since Calliope (1952) until Transitoire Observable (2003). Lecture and discussion led by Bootz.
Afternoon session: Documenting French digital poetry in ELMCIP French Language Electronic Literature research collection.

Participants will first encounter some of the history of French digital poetry and view and interact with some early works. In the afternoon, participants will work together to document this history and these works in the ELMCIP Knowledge Base in a workshop led by Baillehache, who has been developing a research collection on the topic with students at Georgia University.

Abstract (in English)

Syntonie is a project of digital review for ipad that would prefigure an anthology of French digital poetry. Only 3 works originally designed for a computer will be carried on ipad. The choose of the works, the new computing and the semiotics design will be done at the laboratory Paragraphe in relationship with the publisher. We will examine here the questions that this remediatisation asked: what is lost? What is preserved? What is changed? What balance between mediation for present audience and fidelity to the work? Are they facets of the work we can only document (semiotic representations inside the original program for instance)? Is remediatisation an act of preservation?

All these questions will be asked in technical, semiotics, literary and publishing points of view. The project will only begin in February and we will document all the process.

Description (in English)

First produced in 1998, Bas Böttcher’s looppool marks a specific generational moment in the history of online poetry and netart. Simple yet delightful, its palindrome title playfully describes the Sisyphean loop of wandering red billiard balls through a textual maze composed of scattered objects, thoughts, and actions. The reader can either passively watch as these spherical flaneurs wander along the pre-selected path or click to alter their course. Rather than convey the sense of an infinite possibility space, the paths of these poems are highly constrained. Like a Möbius strip, there is no outside to this looppool and regardless of the direction taken, the leisurely poem will wander forever along an unbroken loop.
