Joao Enxuto conceptual body of work is driven by the influence of new technology on traditional approaches to aesthetics, art making, and cultural institutions. Using digital art databases and internet-based e-commerce platforms like Google Art Project as a conceptual springboard, the duo has explored the future of the art-viewing experience. “As screen interfaces become a primary means for the disembodied spectator to access artworks, and as museums give up the responsibility of digitization to a centralized database, Google Art Project will in turn dominate the search for art in the way that it dominates internet search,” he said. “Artworks, like any other type of data, will be optimized algorithmically.” In their “Anonymous Paintings” series, Enxuto and Love captured screenshots, from virtual museum walk-throughs, of artworks blurred according to copyright restrictions and censorship. The images were then printed and displayed on wooden stretchers to reflect the conventional presentation of paintings in a gallery setting.
