Short biography

Manuel Portela is Professor in Anglo-American Studies in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, University of Coimbra, Portugal, where he teaches courses on literature and new media. He is the author of O Comércio da Literatura: Mercado e Representação [The Commerce of Literature: Marketplace and Representation] (Lisbon: Antígona, 2003), a study of the English literary market in the 18th century, and Scripting Reading Motions: The Codex and the Computer as Self-reflexive Machines (MIT Press, 2013). He has translated fiction, poetry, and theatre, including works by Laurence Sterne, William Blake, and Samuel Beckett. He received the National Award for Translation for Tristram Shandy in 1998. He has published, exhibited, and performed his own sound, visual and digital works. He is a contributing editor of PO.EX: A Digital Archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature (http://po-ex.net/), the general editor of the LdoD Archive: Collaborative Digital Archive of the Book of Disquiet (https://ldod.uc.pt/), and director of the PhD Program in the Materialities of Literature at the University of Coimbra.
